Are you supposed to feel sad if your philandering ex-hubby has a fatal accident and just happens to be in the company of young, attractive woman when it happens. What is the emotional protocol, and what is the public expectation when he is a celebrity, and because of that you are too? The world is eager to know what Joanna knows about his death and the mysterious woman who was with him when he died.

It’s an interesting topic to wade into, the question of fame and whether being a public figure gives the media and fans the right to demand access to each moment of their lives. Does being in the limelight mean you automatically sign away your right to privacy? Does wanting a story or a headline warrant hounding a celebrity, perhaps even to the point of distress or worse?

I think there is a common misconception about public persona and interaction being part of their job, as opposed to the world understanding that a star, celebrity and public figure also has a right to privacy. Possibly even more so, when the majority of their lives is out there to be gawked at and commented on.

The author captures the invasive nature of the press, the lack of trust in the people around them, and the fragility of the person in the midst of news hungry media and gossipmongers. It must be incredibly difficult to realise that close friends and family will happily sell your intimate moments, your photos and your secrets for money or moment of fame.

I thought it was a little dialogue heavy and repetitive in the middle, however it is still a good read. The core is, for me at least, understanding that there is always a way forward even when your heart breaks, your trust in people is destroyed and every door seems to be locked. They aren’t. It’s also about misunderstandings and the way relationships can be redefined as we grow older, and as we enter new periods of our lives. Morgan always delivers a premise that gives plenty of food for thought.

Review

Gayle is a career woman who made a choice, a choice that meant leaving her two daughters behind her as she built her remarkable career. It takes a freak accident for her to realise that perhaps she made the wrong choice somewhere along the way.

There was a really interesting point made by Gayle at the beginning of the book, that when you achieve a lot or very often people tend to use the word ‘lucky’ in combination with your achievements. It absolutely is dismissive to assume that luck, as opposed to hard work, plays a role in a successful career, especially when it comes to women. 

It resonated with me because certain close individuals feel I achieved because I somehow had more help, when the truth is that I worked hard for each exam and to achieve each rung of my career ladder, because I was determined to succeed. These kind of phrases tend to be used in context with the success of women a lot more than men. Men are successful because they work hard, women are successful due to others or luck.

I think Morgan really hits the nail on the head with her personal note to readers. In these really difficult times, especially with a different kind of Christmas looming, we all need to be disappear into the folds of a heartwarming and jolly old festive story.

With that in mind I also want to note how much more depth the author is adding to her characters. She has clearly established a firm place in women’s fiction. It’s not just about fluffy unicorn love and endings, which is also fine, but Morgan digs deeper to make her characters more relatable to the reader. 

These fractured mother-daughter relationships could be something a reader responds to, because the reality is life isn’t just all about happy, love and butterfly moments. Sometimes it hurts and huge steps have to taken to overcome pride, baggage and to right previous wrongs. As always Morgan gives readers an excellent reading experience.

The author doesn’t paint Flora as the nasty interloper, which is what often happens when a new partner is introduced to the family. Instead she presents both sides of the difficult situation. On one side there is Flora, who has never experienced being part of a family, which is probably why she overcompensates in certain situations. Then the family unit who are reluctant to accept someone new stepping into the role the mother used to inhabit.

It’s very much an intense emotional minefield, as Flora tries to navigate the pain and distress of the two young girls that are the entire world to her boyfriend. Molly thaws with each genuine moment of love and attention, but Izzy is determined to get rid of Flora.

To make things even more difficult the awkward foursome reluctantly spend a holiday with the best friend of a dead and very perfect mother and wife. It brings feelings both old and new to the surface, which means there is no choice but to face the truth.

It’s women’s fiction – a story of upheaval, grief and broken families.

In the last few years Morgan has successfully moved from romance to more complex contemporary fiction for women. She takes her characters to greater depth and her stories cross into more complex topics.

It’s a beautiful read, uplifting and incredibly sad at times. Full of genuine emotions and vulnerable people. Morgan hits the mark once again.

Grace loves everything in its place and organising every single detail for every person in her family and perhaps even in her close vicinity. She is really looking forward to celebrating 25 years of marriage with her loving husband, until he decides to spring a nasty surprise on her. The kind of surprise that you never forget or forgive for that matter.

Side-note: I couldn’t believe the absolute gall of David when it came to the trip to Paris. The brass balls on that middle-aged muppet in the middle of a midlife crisis. Are you kidding me?

Grace decides to take her life back and goes on a path of self-discovery. In Paris. By herself. Really spontaneous. Not exactly like the little girl inside her who needs to have structured order in her life. Letting loose isn’t as easy as it sounds.

She stumbles upon a young girl who is on her own trip to discover self. Being independent in Paris sounds really exciting, except for the small fact she lied about her ability to speak French, and yet she still manages to get a job in a bookshop in Paris. Then there is the slight matter of the learning disability, and hey the lack of French in France in a shop full of French books. Yeh, no problem whatsoever. Audrey believes in jumping without looking.

Once again Morgan proves why she is so popular and such a bookworm favourite when it comes her stories about relationships, love and romance. She combines the serious with the more amusing aspects of life.

Although I really enjoy her more whimsical and happy reads, I must say I am loving her ventures into women’s fiction. She knows exactly how to capture each emotional depth with an admirable accuracy, whether it be a high or a low. From the middle-aged woman who rediscovers herself to the young girl looking for her place in the big wide world.

It’s women’s fiction with that Sarah Morgan flair. You always get a great read.

The Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan

The fact Morgan has stepped into more serious women’s fiction is evident in this novel. It isn’t just a feel good story for Christmas, it’s emotional, deep and meaningful. The author explores the relationships between siblings, as children and as adults, and the family structure. In this case there is also the question of what constitutes being a mother or father.

You don’t need to give birth to a child to be a parent to one. Biology is only the basis for our genetic markers, the major input when it comes to nurture, as opposed to nature, is what parenting or caregivers give us as we grow from infancy to adulthood. Stewart and Suzanne shape the girls for the majority of their lives, despite having spent their early years with their birth parents.

The death of their parents has left them all traumatised and Suzanne is suffering from what is probably PTSD. Posy, Hannah and Beth all deal with the past in their own ways. Beth is overprotective, Hannah keeps herself emotionally distant from everyone, and Posy believes she has to make other people happy first before herself.

This story is about these women, these sisters finding themselves, understanding the influence their past has had on them and learning to move forward. It’s about the fragile and tenacious relationships between siblings. Love, jealousy, misconceptions and not understanding the adult the child has grown into.

It’s funny, emotional and heart-warming. It’s quite simply Morgan at her best, which guarantees an excellent read.

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here; Sarah Morgan’s first venture into women’s fiction, and I can honestly say it was worth the wait. Finally Morgan has taken a step towards a genre, which will give her the opportunity to show her full potential. Not that she has to prove how talented she is as a writer or storyteller, but this means she has less boundaries fencing her creativity and talent in.

The story is about three generations of the Stewart women, their relationships with each other, and the secrets they keep to make sure they all stay safe. The focus is on Lauren and Jenna, sisters who know each other like the back of their hands or at least they both think they do. The main thing they have in common is a disdain for the mother they both experienced as aloof and neglectful.

Jenna still lives near her childhood home on Martha’s Vineyard. Her whole life revolves around becoming pregnant and having a baby, to the point of putting her marriage on the line. Lauren is trying to deal with her obnoxious teenage daughter and her husband, who seems to be focused on everything other than his family.

Nancy has been keeping her own painful secrets in order to protect her daughters. Then when tragedy strikes in the family she finds herself having to confront her past and her fears in order to heal wounds of the past.

There is an emphasis on the tenuous strings holding people and relationships together, and the way they are easily shattered. Words said in haste, being in the wrong place at the right time and not having the courage to speak out. All things that can change the course of a life.

The author has a very distinctive style when it comes to story-telling. It’s a mixture of pure honest emotion, the intricacies of relationships, and her flair for timing and creating the kind of scenes that tug at your heartstrings.

The story of the Stewart’s is subtle and relatable. It speaks to the mother and daughter relationships we all experience, often struggle with, and yet ultimately are also driven by and flourish because of them. The sisterhood that exists, albeit it often subconsciously, and regardless of whether via blood connection or not, to support each other in times of struggle.

The secrets we keep usually don’t stay buried forever.

It’s a successful and exciting new venture for Morgan, and I hope just the beginning of many more.

Moonlight over Manhattan by Sarah Morgan

In this sixth part of the ‘From Manhattan with Love’ series we are introduced to the love interest of Harriet. If you’ve been following the series you will know that she is one half of the Bark Rangers, a dog-walking service run by twin sisters Harriet and Fliss.

Fliss has decided to rekindle her romance with her ex-hubby, and she has also decided to move to The Hamptons. This means Harriet has to get used to doing things by herself. She decides to set herself challenges, to do things she wouldn’t normally have the courage to do.

During one of these challenges, which ends up not going to plan, she meets a handsome doctor. A few days later the two of them reconnect when he has difficulty taking care of a rather anxious dog.

Leaving aside the obvious love story this is also a tale about trust and feeling safe. Harriet has a lifetime of insecurities she has to deal with on a daily basis. The question is whether Ethan will make them worse or make her feel secure enough to overcome them.

We might need other people now and again, but every one of us needs to find our own inner strength to achieve our goals and find a wee bit of happiness in life.

In 2018 Sarah Morgan will be going in a slightly new direction, and taking all her readers with her, when she wanders into the more complex sub-genre of Women’s Fiction. I am looking forward to this step forwards for Morgan, because it is long overdue in my opinion. It’s time she got her teeth into something with a little more substance, to dig deeper and to shower readers with raw emotions, even the kind that don’t always leave you feeling happy and content.

Holiday in the Hamptons by Sarah Morgan

This is the fifth book in the From Manhattan with Love series. If you’ve been following the books, this one features Harriet and Fliss, the twins who run a successful dog-walking business in New York. The focus is on Fliss and her ex-hubby Seth.

This story is dialogue heavy in a sense that the main characters spend a lot of time really digging into their problems. It is less light fluffy candy floss and more of a toffee you have to chew. Morgan can write the perfect literary equivalent of a chocolate chip cookie or a create a tear inducing read, and yet she is also a dab hand at the more intricate relationship plots.

Holiday in the Hamptons is witty and amusing, but it is also about a couple who disassemble their relationship in an attempt to at least salvage a friendship. Sometimes you have to step outside and look in through your own living room window to try and get some objectivity.

Fliss and Seth have spent quite a long time apart since the disastrous and rather abrupt end of their marriage. Fliss spends a large amount of time trying to avoid any contact with Seth. Not because she hates him, but because she is scared of her real feelings. There are so many unresolved issues she has never laid to bed or not really come to terms with yet. Seth just reminds her of her own failings.

Seth is giving Fliss the space she needs, although he would rather be one half of a happy couple again. Which is probably the reason he goes along with her crazy and outlandish scheme to keep Seth at arms length. It is quite hilarious though.

Morgan is an expert at entertaining her readers, whilst delving into the complexities of love, romance and relationships. There is no such thing as a dull moment in any of her stories.

New York Actually by Sarah Morgan

Let me start off by saying that in my opinion Valentine, and especially his buddy Brutus, are the unexpected stars of this book. They are the cherry on top of another literary ice cream sundae by Sarah Morgan.

Molly makes her money by giving advice to others. An anonymous agony aunt with about as much experience at successful relationships and love, as a badger at sunbathing.

This is actually a pet peeve of mine. People with zero practical experience giving advice based on theoretical knowledge.

Of course Molly seems to be blissfully unaware of this contradiction or rather the fact her inexperience may be causing others pain and conflict. It’s easy to dole out advice and have an opinion on the lives of strangers, especially when they all remain anonymous. The problem is that the eager agony aunt only ever hears a one-sided conversation.

Daniel meets Molly under what we shall call contrived circumstances. He tries to attract the attention of a beautiful woman in the most extraordinary way. Hmm so the problem is that both of them have buckets full of secrets, which means interactions based on misconceptions and half-truths.

Once again Morgan manages to tug on the heartstrings with a strong and passionate story, and yet at the same time she makes sure the reader gets quite a few laughs.

The Miracle on 5th Avenue by Sarah Morgan

This is the story of Eva and Lucas and the third book in the From Manhattan with Love series.

I enjoyed the way Morgan left everyone else more or less out of the mix this time. The majority of the book is just Eva and Lucas interacting with each other. Just pure emotions and a lot of conversation.

Eva lives in a happy bubble full of unicorns and candy-floss dreams. As far as she is concerned everything can be healed or fixed with a little love and a lot of food. She is a wee hurricane of chaos and the complete opposite of Lucas.

Lucas has become a recluse since the death of his wife, and certainly doesn’t welcome the interruption caused by the incoming storm called Eva.

Eva manages to unintentionally start the great thaw of icy Lucas, which in itself isn’t a bad thing except for the minor issue of Lucas not wanting to be warmed up by anyone. The question is whether she can make a tiny crack in the ice around his heart or will this finally be the man to break Eva’s deeply ingrained belief in her happily ever after.

It’s sweet, savoury and quite delicious in places. Everything you would expect from a story by Sarah Morgan. Exactly the right kind of story in time for Christmas.
