#MiniBlogBlitz The Warrior’s Innocent Captive by Ella Matthews

It’s my turn on the Blog Blitz for The Warrior’s Innocent Captive by Ella Matthews.

About the Author

Ella Matthews lives and works in beautiful South Wales. When not thinking about handsome heroes she can be found walking along the coast with her husband and their two children (probably still thinking about heroes but at least pretending to be interested in everyone else).

About the book

An impossible choice: His family or love – As steward to the Earl of Borwyn, Erik Ward had only admired sheltered noblewoman Linota Leofric from afar – until he has to escort her on a dangerous journey. When she’s kidnapped, he rescues the courageous beauty, revelling in finally having her in his arms. But Erik has a secret plan to reunite his family – now he’s forced to choose between that and his growing feelings for Linota…

Review

This is the third book, and the last as I understand it, in the House of Leofric series. I would suggest reading the others to get a better view of the interwoven storylines and characters.

Erik is a wee bit of an anti-hero or perhaps a bit of a bad boy? Then again he could just be a man who is forced to make certain choices to fulfill family loyalty, but that also means others view him as a man who thinks nothing of committing a betrayal.

It’s a historical romance with an emphasis on the love aspect, as opposed to a read that focuses on the historical element. It’s very much a story of torn loyalties and love that springs up in the most unexpected of places. An escapist read with plenty of burning desire, misunderstandings and ultimately one that leads to the right choice or not as in may be.

There was more character depth this time, which was a lot better than in the previous books. The author gave the reader much more back information on the ins and outs of the Leofrics. The emotional tug of war of guilt and blame opens up a whole different world of opportunities.

disgraesure.pngAbout the Author

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

The Determinded Lord Hadleigh cover UK better.jpgReview

If you’ve read Virginia Heath before then you might recognise characters in this book, who are featured in other books in the series. Those characters are given a brand new lease on life and presented from a different perspective, as they embark on a journey together.

I like the way Heath throws in important topics of the times to give the read a more serious tone. It gives the characters more depth and any resulting emotions a more realistic feel.

Penny is a woman burdened by the weight of the crimes of her husband. His actions have left her in an impossible situation. Her and their very young son. On top of that she is a woman damaged by the brutality of said husband and the oppressive life she was forced to lead with him.

It’s a heartfelt romance with the vibe of an 80s romance and the serious tone of a modern read. It has a slightly darker side to it, which I found commendable given the topic. Usually the reality of violent relationships are glossed over or used for dramatic moments in the romance genre or worse. In general I’m not a fan of writing rape in a way that romanticises it. Instead Heath gives the victim a voice and let’s her navigate her way back to a healthy relationship. The other side of that is Hadleigh trying to understand and be sensitive to what she wants.

It’s a lovely and sensitive read at times. The scenes between Hadleigh and the little boy are incredibly cute. Those heartstrings might get a tug or two. Heath certainly knows how to spin a lovely romantic read and give it a sensitive undertone at the same time.

About the book

A spy on a mission…Until he meets this heiress!

Miss Theodora Cranford’s learned to keep her impetuous nature locked away. She won’t be deceived by another man who can’t see past her fortune. She wants an honourable, sensible sort – not a self-assured scoundrel like her new neighbour, Lord Gray. Although she’s sure there’s more to him than meets the eye… But after that first captivating kiss, she’s certainly left wanting more!

Review

I think we all know who the real star of this book is, the disgraceful and unapologetic Trefor. He sets the tone for the light-hearted and amusing vibe of the story. The main characters and the furry ball of slipper-napping trouble all have a sense of mischief about them, which garners the occasional grin and laugh.

The disgraced Lord Gray is actually on a mission to find a ruthless smuggler and has narrowed the suspects down to two people living in a specific rural area.  During his assignment he gets distracted by a fiery haired heiress, who pretends to be prim and proper, but has the heart of a thrill-seeking wench.

Two souls collide when they meet, except for Gray, Thea is a no-go because of the mission he is on, and he has a dubious past, which means she should stay away from him. The two embark upon a seductive and playful game of tethered desire. Going a step further each time and crossing small boundaries, as they play with fire.

I would actually recommend this to a reader, who perhaps isn’t inclined to pick up a frock-twister, bodice-ripper, highland romp or sweet romance. It’s a lovely way to introduce new readers to the genre, possibly because Heath pulls off the love, seduction and lust without taking herself or the characters too seriously.

They feel real and the reader can be invested in their lives, but they can laugh at them in equal measures. Not a feat everyone can pull off, because a lot of romances become too bogged down in devastating plot-lines, cliffhangers or over-the-top scenes.

It’s romance with a fun and humorous vibe. A light-hearted read for the moments when the heart needs pleasure instead of worry, fright or pain.

The Notting Hill Diaries by Sarah Morgan

9781472054852

Sarah Morgan has the ability to switch from cosy, snug, heartwarming romance to throbbing, breathless, heart pounding sexual encounters in a matter of seconds. The first is likely to make your heart melt and the latter will probably make you blush.

You might even find that suddenly you can hear the sound of your own heart exceptionally well as it races in time with the on-page in-book action.

The Cosmo Red Hot Reads are an exciting collaboration between Cosmopolitan magazine and Harlequin UK & Mills and Boon. They are set on bringing you the spicy tales and romantic interludes of today’s modern woman. This book brings you Ripped and Burned, the stories of two sisters.

Ripped is all about the voluptuous, intelligent and wee bit unlucky Hayley. Her boyfriends can deal with the curves but not with the brain that comes with them.

Morgan brings up an important issue in Ripped, just how often men feel threatened by a woman they are in a relationship with if she is intelligent, and even more so if she has a career in a predominantly male field. More often than not women are expected to follow not lead and certainly not walk beside the male in the relationship.

Luckily she seems to have caught the attention of a hot piece of hunky called Nico, who doesn’t want to change her and wants her in her entirety. What a pity Hayley has decided she will only play without any kind of strings attached.

In Burned we get to hear more about Hayley’s sister Rosie, who seems to be rather good at scaring away her male friends. Physically scare them that is. Just her bad luck, obviously a trait inherited via her family, that she just happens to bump into the one person she never wanted to meet again.

Hunter Black is back in town and ready to mess with Rosie again. Mess with her head, heart and most definitely with her body.
Rosie is powered by her conviction and willpower, just say no to Hunter. No problem for a tough girl used to fighting her own battles. Right?

These are tantalizing, sizzling stories of smouldering bodies melded together like a hot fudge sundae and the romance is just the cherry on top.
