Review

This is the fifth book in the Edinburgh Crime Mysteries, however it can absolutely be read as a standalone novel.

As a young boy DI Hunter Wilson found a bloodied body with his friend, when they returned with the police said body was gone. Now thirty years later the situation appears to be repeating itself, yet another dead body that mysteriously disappears. Guess who is on the case – DI Hunter Wilson. What are the chances of that happening?

This is a crime read, a police procedural, and it also wades into the world of crime that was often swept under the rug many decades ago. I’d like to say things are different, but a target on the back is still a thing in the 21st century.

The strength of the piece is the way Penny pens the team, the way they work together and support each other. The slightly eccentric and vigilante aspect of the team, as they work together with Hunter no matter the obstacle. Also the mob vibe and criminal underbelly storyline that flows throughout. It gives the read a pinch of something extra.

In its own way the solution to the crime is a nod in the direction of the underlying hatred that still flows with such an intensity against certain people and communities. I liked the way the author gave the crime a presence in both past and present, which highlights both how far we have come and still have to go.
