About the book

Forced to wed the warrior – Falling for the man… Noblewoman Amée Évreaux had pledged her life to God, until her father promised her in marriage to thundering Norseman, Jorund Jötunnson. After escaping her overbearing father, Amée vows never to fall under another man’s thumb, but her resistance to being Jorund’s wife turns to desire as she gets to know her intriguing new husband. For beneath his fierce exterior she’s glimpsed an unexpectedly pure heart. If only she can penetrate the fortress that surrounds it…

Review

Amée is in preparation to give herself entirely to God, just a few more steps and she will be become one of his many brides. Her plans are thrown into disarray when a brutal Viking and his merry band of warriors literally knock down doors to get to her – the bride to be of said Viking.

Her father has decided to use her as a political and economic pawn, under certain restrictions of course, but very much as a bargaining chip. She is horrified by the news and simultaneously excited by this stranger who has burst into her life.

This is Highland romance without the Scotsman more or less. The innocent maiden is consumed with desire whilst simultaneously being scared out of her wits by the rugged eye-candy aka Viking warrior – standard plot, although Morris does go the extra mile to give her characters some depth. Naturally the story doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the excruciating pulsating attraction, which culminates in smouldering ‘it takes two to tango’ scenes.

If you’re looking for a heartbreak, desire and passionate encounters, then this will be right up your street.

About the book

Christmas has arrived… And she’s spending it with her boss! New Yorker Erin is intrigued when Hugo Harrington asks for her help on a hotel renovation in London, just weeks before Christmas! But Erin soon discovers how personal this project is to her brooding boss. Watching him wrestle with the memories of his past uncovers a side to Hugo she’s never seen. And then a stolen snowbound kiss changes everything…

Review

This is the third book in the Christmas at the Harrington Park Hotel series. All three books can be read as standalone novels, however they are interlinked via characters who appear in all the books. What’s slightly different about the series is the fact each one is written by a different author. I would recommend reading the first two because it gives a better idea and backstory to the relationship between siblings.

This one features the eldest brother, Hugo. The broody, serious man who has a bit of a negative reputation when it comes to his siblings and similarly he felt just as slighted for his own reasons. Now he is determined to prove something to himself and his family, and for that he really needs Erin.

Erin however has different priorities, so when Hugo suggests a job overseas for big money and she says no – well he has a hard time accepting it and sets out to find out why she would even think of saying no to him. That’s the beginning of a connection, which hinges on the insecurities and lack of trust of one, and the often thoughtless audacity of the other.

I was intrigued by the different author for each book in the series approach. It sort of guarantees a completely different feel for each book, despite it being the same genre and similar subject matter. It’s also an excellent way of introducing readers to more than one author, because series often tend to be a one author for all the books kind of thing.

It’s a romantic endeavour, an escapist read, which captures some serious moments when it comes to putting family before work and mending broken bridges from the past.

Ella Matthews lives and works in beautiful South Wales. When not thinking about handsome heroes she can be found walking along the coast with her husband and their two children (probably still thinking about heroes but at least pretending to be interested in everyone else).

About the book

Protected by The Beast – Undone by the man

Racing cross-country pursued by danger, widow Lady Ellena Swein isn’t pleased to be taken back to her father’s castle. But with his knight Sir Braedan Leofric, also known as The Beast, as her captor, she has little choice! Ellena is surprised by his honourable and protective nature, even if she shouldn’t trust him. And when all seems to conspire against them, Braedan’s secret could either extinguish the spark between them or make it burn brighter.

Review

Sir Braedan Leofric, also known as the Beast, has been sent to escort Lady Ellena Swein back to her father. Her life and her honour are at risk. She has become the target for certain individuals who either want her dead or want her as a wife, because that means they get her property.

Ellena is determined to fight for her voice, despite everything being against her using it. As a woman she is just property used to secure land and truces via marriage. There is no respect from her father and there certainly wasn’t any from her cruel now dead husband. After running the Swein estate alone successfully for many years she expects her father to at least listen to her request to keep doing so. Little does she know that he has already made his own plans for her estate and life.

The two of them aren’t thrilled to be thrown together, but it’s fair to say that sometimes unusual circumstances make for unexpected relationships. Ellena is drawn to the man who is feared because of his reputation and Braedan feels an instinctive need to protect her.

It’s historical romance – a fast-paced story full of turmoil.

Matthews balances conflict, anger, violence, turmoil, attraction and love in equal measures, which gives her readers the kind of read they will enjoy. The natural attraction, the obstacles keeping them apart and the question whether they will succumb to the electricity pulling them together. It has all the ingredients a historical romance needs.

About the Author

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

About the book

His heart is a fortress… And she’s trespassing!

After losing all he holds dear in a horrific fire, Max Aldersley, Earl of Rivenhall, shuns the world—until he catches Effie Nithercott digging holes on his estate! He banishes the intrepid archaeologist and the unsettled feelings she rouses within him. But she returns even more determined and infuriatingly desirable than before! He wonders just how deep she’s prepared to dig—so far she’ll reach the man beneath his scars?

Review

I’m not sure whether Max is more annoyed by the fact Effie is a woman stomping round in trousers or by the fact she is oblivious to his annoyance. When he finds her digging holes on his land like a rabbit building a multiplex warren, he is quick to demand she leave and never return. Effie however doesn’t let anything get between her and her research.

She demands to be not only heard, but also that her commands be listened to and met. Not much of a shy, obedient woman of society, much to the dismay of Max. The woman is quite frustrating, exasperating even.

As the story evolves Effie not only has to come to terms with the fact she is attracted to the annoying Earl of Rivenhall, she also has to deal with the lack of professional acknowledgment in her area of expertise, because of her gender.

I have probably said this before about Heath, but it’s always worth mentioning. She has a knack of combining the breathless fun of a bodice-ripper, without the ripping, with a jolly good sense of humour. You get cheeky fun, a slow-burning romance with escalating tension and characters that whip themselves into a frenzy with sharp retorts. Duels with tongues at sunrise. Okay, that sounds a bit naughty.

Heath also weaves elements of women’s empowerment into the story, which are often only small concessions, but given the era they are a step in the right direction.

Her Dirty Little Secret by J.C. Harroway

dirty little secretHer Dirty Little Secret is the second book by J.C. Harroway for the shiny new Mills & Boon DARE imprint, by the way the new covers are stunning.

Harley is held back by her insecurities and fears. She thinks everyone sees her through the same lens as her father, who thinks she is lazy, stupid and not exactly a great representation of their talented family. She struggles with her dyslexia on a daily basis, because her parent always makes her feel inferior and different.

When her childhood crush strolls back into her life she also believes he judges her for the same reasons. Every sentence and thought is permeated with the fear of failure, especially when it comes to doing business. Harley is eager to establish her own business reputation, so Jack is both an annoying and simultaneously  very appealing distraction.

Harroway turns up the heat to scorching in this wee romantic delight of a story. The two main characters spend quite a lot of time doing the horizontal tango and quite a number of other suave bedroom moves. Be prepared for breathless and passionate moments with these very feisty characters.

This author combines serious topics with subtle eroticism and fiery romances. It’s a very readable combination, and puts the zest in the Dare series.

About the book

Harlequin DARE, a new romance series featuring strong, independent women and sizzling hot heroes. Harlequin DARE stories push the boundaries of sexual explicitness while keeping the focus on the developing romantic relationship.

A daring game of temptation

She’ll play his game—but only by her rules!

Alex Lancaster is an adrenaline junkie. He’s also a sexy British billionaire who should come with his own warning signs. When Libby insists she is done with men who live on the edge, Alex coaxes her out of her comfort zone—professionally and very, very personally. Libby’s taking a high-stakes gamble, but the pay-off could win her everything…

Review

You might want to have your hand fan or battery powered handheld fan at the ready for this one. It might just get your pulse racing and your temperature a’rising to a level that might necessitate a cool breeze.

Libby is a strong independent business woman, who has put her love life on hold for the last few years to concentrate on herself and her business. She is also recovering from a traumatic event that has made her cautious about close romantic relationships, but hey having a little fun when you’re hot under the collar isn’t forbidden. Which is exactly what goes through her head when she meets the wealthy and handsome Alex. Suddenly being all professional is the last thing on her mind and all she can think about is this man who has got all her synapses firing on full power.

In the midst of all the horizontal tangoing, the passionate encounters and provocative game-playing the two of them start to develop a real emotional connection. The kind of connection Libby is still shying away from. The only reason she hasn’t started to run yet is the fact Alex has managed, for the first time in a long time, to help her to experience the rush of life.

The new DARE series doesn’t just cater to the reader who believes in the excitement of love, butterflies in their stomach and the heat of a blush rising to their cheeks. They also cater to the ones wanting the thrill of the chase, the excitement of sexual attraction and the hotter than hot interactions between the characters.

Harroway brings exactly the right amount of romance, sexual tension and eroticism to bring pleasure to the readers. Yes, that pun was intentional. It gets really racy and is superbly tempestuous. It might even elicit a gasp or two while you read.

This is pocket-sized passion that fits in your handbag, so you can enjoy a titillating read whenever and wherever you want. Mills & Boon for the 21st century woman.

Review

City girl Amanda has literally escaped London and fled to the wilds of Yorkshire. Ok, wilds might be a slight exaggeration, but hey sometimes life in an English village can often  be a little like living in a jungle. An eccentric and very pretty jungle, but a jungle nevertheless.

She is looking for a completely different kind of lifestyle. Not the restrictive mapped out lifestyle her parents insist she lead. She more or less stumbles over the attractive vet next door, who doesn’t think much of her or her strange shop. Once an outsider always an outsider.

The village women make it their personal goal to play matchmaker for Ben and Amanda. They are really subtle at it as well, not. Luckily the two of them don’t seem to mind the meddling very much.

The Chic Boutique is a charming tale of mistakes, regret and believing in new beginnings. Happiness isn’t always being the most powerful with the most money and living in an apartment overlooking the epicentre of a pulsing city. Sometimes happiness is finding inner peace, regardless of whether it is in city or in a quaint village.

This story is about Amanda asserting herself, taking charge and living a life she wants, as opposed to living one someone else thinks she should be satisfied with. Fortunately for her she happens to find two balls of fluff and a strong shoulder to lean on, as she stumbles (boy does she stumble a lot) her way to independence/

Dove mixes the oddity of village life with memorable characters and budding romance to create a very enjoyable read.

It Had To Be You by Nikki Logan and Barbara Hannay

it-had-to-be-you-millsTo celebrate finding their Man of the Year 2016, Courtenay Hayles, Mills & Boon have published It Had To Be You, which contains two lovely romantic stories.

Molly Cooper’s Dream Date by Barbara Hannay and Shipwrecked with Mr Wrong by Nikki Logan.

Two completely different stories about love.

Whether you are looking for the careless sun-swept feel of Logan’s story or the more practical approach to searching for Mr Perfect by Hannay. There is something for everyone in this double-whammy.

Molly Cooper’s Dream Date

Molly is dead set on finding the perfect English gentleman, and apparently they tend to be easier to locate in London. So a house swap with a gentleman in London sounds like the perfect opportunity to look for him.

Patrick is excited to relax on the other side of the world and he also wasn’t expecting to be so intrigued by his house swap mate. Molly is suddenly far more interesting than the reason he wanted a break in the first place.

Hannay has given her story a modern social media aspect. Dialogue via emails and diary entries by both characters. This way the reader gets straight to the inner turmoil, while watching the two of them write themselves into a relationship.

Shipwrecked with Mr Wrong

The last thing Honor expects, needs or wants is an invader in her tiny haven. Her own personal peace on earth is disrupted by an obnoxious underwater Indiana Jones, who happens to believe in mermaids.

Rob is curious about the island hermit, who would rather spend her time watching and recording the animal kingdom, than spend time with him or anyone for that matter. The two of them are drawn to each other, but Honor has a terrible secret that is keeping her from connecting with other people. Animals are a safer bet.

The Scandal Behind the Wedding by Bella Frances

download (12)

Sometimes you just have to accept it when fate decides to place the woman or man of your dreams in your path. It may not be when you expect it or the person you might have expected, but when it does happen you should maybe just go with the flow.

When it comes to Georgia she just can’t cope with any kind of unexpected flow. She likes to know where she is going and have all situations under control, so she is like a wet kipper caught on dry land when she ends up at a dodgy escort party, which is supposed to be a singles extravaganza.

Unfortunately smooth businessman Danny finds himself in the same predicament. A quick exit is needed pronto. He can’t afford to be associated with any kind of scandal, but there just happens to be this intoxicating helpless looking female, who has captured his attention.

The two of them end up making a rash decision with enormous consequences. Their mutual attraction becomes muddied by paperwork and contracts. Their physical and emotional attachment is blurred by the confines of their business relationship. They both need to wake up and smell the roses. Act upon gut instinct instead adhering to rules and regulations.

Frances has written a snazzy little romance with plenty of power and emotion.

It’s got to be Perfect by Haley Hill

What do you if you have totally failed at dating and are still looking for Mr Right? Start your own exclusive dating agency of course. That is exactly what Ellie Rigby decides to do. Help all those other good-looking singles out there to find their perfect match.

Sounds simple enough, eh? Well it does until Ellie realises just how many of her potential clients are just ever so slightly eccentric and high maintenance. I’m not sure I would be able to find a partner for a macho playboy gynaecologist with a porn-star name either.

Of course the problem with sifting through all those handsome men is that inevitably there will be one of them, who just happens to caught your eye. Not even matchmakers are immune to the charms of Cupid.

It’s got to be Perfect is a comedy of errors with a bevy of pretty people with one thing in common, the search for Mr or Mrs Perfect.

Hill doesn’t mince her words when it comes to the dialogues, They are refreshing, witty and occasionally slightly on the graphic side.

She has her main character concentrate her efforts on the top ten percent, as opposed to the more normal looking single. Beauty attracts mates and not plain Janes, is the message, which leaves a slightly negative tinge to the otherwise light-hearted story.
