#PublicationDayPush The Marquess Next Door by Virginia Heath

It’s the Publication Day Push for The Marquess Next Door by Virginia Heath.

About the Author

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

About the book

A dashing new neighbour… Temptation on her doorstep!  To avoid an unwanted suitor at a ball, Hope Brookes asks another gentleman to rescue her. He obliges – with a surprisingly passionate kiss!

Revealed as her sinfully handsome new neighbour, Lucius, Marquess of Thundersley, they forge a friendship over their balconies. It’s refreshing that Lucius is more interested in her writer dreams than her looks, so why can’t she stop thinking about that kiss?

Review

There aren’t enough sinfully handsome neighbours, who are genuinely invested in romance, raising heartbeats, and awakening passions. Luckily for Hope she has one willing to save her from suitors she would avoid.

The distraction – a passionate kiss – is an unexpected catalyst for a chemical reaction, also known as omg the two have the hots for each other. An undeniable attraction neither of them can deny. The two forge an invigorating friendship, which helps to destroy the walls Hope has built up around her.

I’d say it’s exactly the right time to ride the new wave of love for historical romance, especially Regency romance, following the success of Bridgerton. I embrace the new wave, because it is the perfect escapism in such dire times and it’s a sub-genre that has disappeared a little over the last few decades.

Having read quite a few of Heath’s books, she definitely has a flair for the passion, love and turmoil that readers love when it comes to a romance read. This is no different. It is entertaining and gives readers just the right level of cat and mouse, and more importantly the titillating romance.

It’s my turn on the Blog Blitz for The Warrior’s Innocent Captive by Ella Matthews.

About the book

An impossible choice: His family or love – As steward to the Earl of Borwyn, Erik Ward had only admired sheltered noblewoman Linota Leofric from afar – until he has to escort her on a dangerous journey. When she’s kidnapped, he rescues the courageous beauty, revelling in finally having her in his arms. But Erik has a secret plan to reunite his family – now he’s forced to choose between that and his growing feelings for Linota…

Review

This is the third book, and the last as I understand it, in the House of Leofric series. I would suggest reading the others to get a better view of the interwoven storylines and characters.

Erik is a wee bit of an anti-hero or perhaps a bit of a bad boy? Then again he could just be a man who is forced to make certain choices to fulfill family loyalty, but that also means others view him as a man who thinks nothing of committing a betrayal.

It’s a historical romance with an emphasis on the love aspect, as opposed to a read that focuses on the historical element. It’s very much a story of torn loyalties and love that springs up in the most unexpected of places. An escapist read with plenty of burning desire, misunderstandings and ultimately one that leads to the right choice or not as in may be.

There was more character depth this time, which was a lot better than in the previous books. The author gave the reader much more back information on the ins and outs of the Leofrics. The emotional tug of war of guilt and blame opens up a whole different world of opportunities.

About the book

Marriage…To the highest bidder

Lady Lydia Barton cannot seem to avoid Owen Wolfe since he returned after being wrongly transported for stealing her family’s jewels! But Lydia has more pressing problems―like her impending arranged marriage. Until Owen makes her father a counter-offer for her hand. Is Owen purely after her society connections? Or does Lydia dare hope that the charming stable boy she once loved is still within her ruthless, wealthy new husband?

Review

It has a wee bit of a Heathcliff and Cathy vibe to it. Owen, the lowly servant, is wronged and returns on a more equal standing to those who got rid of him in the first place. He returns with intention of getting revenge. He wants to know who betrayed him and the girl he once loved is one of his targets, although one could argue that he actually tries to save her.

Lydia isn’t exactly lucky when it comes to family. They just consider her a valuable commodity. Something they can auction off to the highest bidder. She is disgusted by the thought they are willing to sell her off, but perhaps more so by the fact Owen is eager to buy her as if she were a valuable racehorse.

Heath excels at good old romance with the vibe of a bodice ripper, but with more emphasis on the emotional attraction, as opposed to pure physical gratification. The relationship and love story develops slowly and builds upon the nostalgia and bonds the two main characters have. Their relationship is combative and there is a fair amount of rejection. It’s exactly what romance readers enjoy – the cat and mouse game of love.

Take a little, give a little and ultimately it becomes a battle of wits – of minds refusing to acknowledge what they both want the most.

The Determinded Lord Hadleigh cover UK better.jpgReview

If you’ve read Virginia Heath before then you might recognise characters in this book, who are featured in other books in the series. Those characters are given a brand new lease on life and presented from a different perspective, as they embark on a journey together.

I like the way Heath throws in important topics of the times to give the read a more serious tone. It gives the characters more depth and any resulting emotions a more realistic feel.

Penny is a woman burdened by the weight of the crimes of her husband. His actions have left her in an impossible situation. Her and their very young son. On top of that she is a woman damaged by the brutality of said husband and the oppressive life she was forced to lead with him.

It’s a heartfelt romance with the vibe of an 80s romance and the serious tone of a modern read. It has a slightly darker side to it, which I found commendable given the topic. Usually the reality of violent relationships are glossed over or used for dramatic moments in the romance genre or worse. In general I’m not a fan of writing rape in a way that romanticises it. Instead Heath gives the victim a voice and let’s her navigate her way back to a healthy relationship. The other side of that is Hadleigh trying to understand and be sensitive to what she wants.

It’s a lovely and sensitive read at times. The scenes between Hadleigh and the little boy are incredibly cute. Those heartstrings might get a tug or two. Heath certainly knows how to spin a lovely romantic read and give it a sensitive undertone at the same time.

#BlogTour The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare

Today it is my pleasure to take part in the BlogTour for The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare. It’s an amusing Regency romance that should come with a warning, so bare that in mind if you get a little hot around the collar whilst reading it.

About the Author

Tessa Dare is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of fourteen historical romance novels and five novellas. Her books have won numerous accolades, including Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA® award (twice) and the RT Book Reviews Seal of Excellence. Booklist magazine named her one of the “new stars of historical romance,” and her books have been contracted for translation in more than a dozen languages.

Mixing wit, sensuality, and emotion, Tessa writes Regency-set romance novels that feel relatable to modern readers. With her bestselling “Spindle Cove” and “Castles Ever After” series, she has had great fun creating heroines who defy the conventions of their time—engaging in “unladylike” pursuits that range from paleontology to beer-making—and dreaming up the strong-willed, sexy heroes who find their hearts ensnared by them.

A librarian by training and a booklover at heart, Tessa makes her home in Southern California, where she lives with her husband, their two children, and a trio of cosmic kitties.

About the book

‘I am a Duke. I’m not asking you to marry me. I am offering to marry you. It’s a different thing entirely.’

When the Duke of Ashbury returns from war scarred, he realises he needs an heir – which means he needs a wife! When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress visits wearing a wedding dress, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.

His terms are simple: They will be husband and wife by night only. No lights, no kissing. No questions about his battle scars. Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has secrets and some rules of her own: They will have dinner together every evening. With conversation. And teasing. Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…

When a girl meets a Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…

Review

Ash is convinced no woman will ever want him or love him, who wants to be intimate with a monster? He has convinced himself that his physical scars will repulse everyone, especially any potential love interests. Emma sees the man behind the horrific scars and finds herself falling for the stubborn aristocrat.

Emotional attachment isn’t part of the deal though. Not according to the deal the two of them have agreed to. It includes an heir to the dukedom, a lot of teasing, and definitely under no circumstances shall there be any kissing. Not an easy task when you’re in the throes of passion.

The Duchess Deal has an equal amount of passion and playfulness, including a house full of scheming staff invested in Emma and Ash, and their very peculiar relationship. At the same time the read is hotter than a chilli pepper. An excellent balancing act of charm, wit and desire.

Lovers of Regency romances want to experience the moments of illicit passion, the moments when there is a sharp intake of a breath just before the feisty beautiful woman is kissed passionately by the debonair gentleman. There are some authors who also manage to infuse the wicked and the saucy with a sense of humour, and that is the core essence of a standout Regency novel. Tessa Dare certainly knows how to combine the hot and heavy horizontal tango with a quick witted humorous dialogue.

Instead of relying on all of the usual clichés and the sometimes stuffy repertoire of this genre, the author has fun with the characters and the plot. This sense of adventure and joie de vivre can be felt throughout the book. Tessa Dare elicits amused snorts and accelerated heartbeats in equal measure.

Q & A with Fiona Harper introducing her new book The Doris Day Vintage Film Club

doris1

Today you are in for a bookworm treat. A great Q & A with author Fiona Harper, my thoughts on her new book The Doris Day Vintage Film Club and to top it all off you can win a vintage makeover by stylists Lipstick and Curls, all courtesy of Mills & Boon. Without further ado let’s welcome Fiona Harper to the blog.

Before we get to the nitty-gritty I would like to do a set of questions called ‘Break the Ice’

Last book you read?
One Hundred Pieces of Me by Lucy Dillon

Did you watch the infamous 50 Shades of Grey?
No. Haven’t read the books either!

A group, singer or song your readers would be surprised to hear you listen to? (I caught that sneaky Sisters of Mercy reference in the book!)
Well, I do have to admit to being a goth when I was a teenager, and I do still love a bit of All About Eve or The Cult.

Which famous person (dead, alive, barely kicking) would you most like to meet?
I think I’m going to have to say Doris Day – who’s just celebrated her 91st birthday. I spent so long watching her films and reading books about her when I was researching The Doris Day Vintage Film Club and I’m totally intrigued by her.

Something you treat yourself to now and again?
A good session playing Tomb Raider – any of them, from the 1997 original to the recent reboot. I love Lara Croft, and exploring booby trap-ridden temples (virtually, of course).

All of the above questions are actually a pretty elaborate pysch evaluation disguised as random questions. Have no fear here come the real ones. Let’s talk The Doris Day Vintage Film Club.

On a previous occasion you said you chose Doris Day because she ‘had been through a lot and come out smiling.’ What is it about Doris you think women of today might relate to?
Firstly, I think it’s her personality, which is partly what made her a huge star in the first place. There’s just something inescapably likeable about Doris. You see her on the screen and you think to yourself, “I’d love to be her friend.” Secondly, I think it’s the fact that although she might have seemed to have what we all want – the glamorous life, money, wonderful men and a stellar career – that everything wasn’t quite as rosy as it seemed on under the surface and she had the same sort of troubles a lot of the rest of us do, especially when it came to the men in her life.

The screen icons of the Golden Hollywood era have become, aside from handful such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall ect., a thing of the past. Nowadays women and girls look up to idols like Madonna, Beyonce, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow instead. What does Doris Day give your vintage film club (other than the fantastic films) that modern-day stars or celebrities don’t or can’t give them?
I think, despite her openness and warmth, there’s still an aura of mystery about Doris. In these days when celebrities are endlessly tweeting their every thought and bombarding us with selfies, that’s quite an attractive thing!

How important is it to you that your characters retain a sense of normality in an otherwise fairytale romance scenario? To be more specific: Is it important that real life dysfunctional families, traumatic events and personality flaws go hand in hand with your characters?
Definitely. Although I write escapist fiction, if everything’s too perfect in my fictional world then readers have nothing to relate to. I think it’s important, even when a story has that ‘how I’d like my life to be’ feel about it, that the characters struggle with the same everyday issues we deal with.

How much of yourself and your own emotions do you let flow into your stories?
Erm…quite a lot. I have been known to cry when writing certain scenes, as I get caught up in the emotion of the characters. I think if I don’t emotionally connect with the story then that’s not going to come through in the writing, and then readers won’t experience the emotional roller coaster as they read either.

Taking a closer look at DDVFC (yes it is totally an acronym now) do you think it is important for children or adults to have closure with an absentee parent?
I think we all have a very basic need to know who we are, and that can be very closely linked to where we came from and who made us. Having watched a lot of Long Lost Family (lovingly renamed “Sob fest” in my household), I’d say that many people experience a sense of incompleteness if they haven’t known one of their parents.

In Claire’s case, which is the bigger betrayal? The fact Dominic lied about his identity or where he was doing it from?
I think it just set all her alarm bells ringing. She felt she’d been duped by men who pretended they were something they weren’t before and hated that feeling of being taken for a ride again. Once she calmed down a bit, she started to be able to see that maybe she wasn’t just reacting to Dominic’s betrayal, but all the other betrayals that had gone before too.
I’m trying really hard not to let too many details of the story flow into the questions (spoilers), so instead let me ask you this:

The DDVFC is a band of women + George, who befriend and support each other, which is an incredibly important theme throughout the book. Is that something you think our society lacks in general? Women coming together and supporting each other in a way only women can?
I think we all want good friends around us, people who will stick by us through thick and thin. Some women have that, and some would like more of those connections in their lives. I do think we’re becoming more insular as a society – connected to our smart phones and tablets instead of to other people – and it’s not a bad thing to remember how much joy interacting with another human being (or two, or even eight!) can be.

Finally I would like to say thank you for answering my questions, including the stranger ones!
Thanks, Cheryl! They were great questions! Really made me think.

Now for my thoughts on The Doris Day Vintage film Club aka my review:

23945303

The Doris Day Vintage Film Club is a mixture of a comedy of errors, strong female friendships, solace in companionship and the accidental collision of two people, who are meant to be together. The story features an amusing twist much like a Shakespearean comedy of errors. It is actually done in a very realistic way, and I can certainly see something like that happening in a real life setting.

It is more than ironic that Claire finds herself in a ‘Pillow Talk’ situation, echoing a Doris Day classic film. Not that she is aware of it, because as far as Claire is concerned Nic is a possible Mr Right under a completely different set of circumstances than she is aware of.

A funny war of written words leads to a huge lie, which starts out small and grows so large that a disaster is unavoidable. The perfect romance turns into a tale of disappointment and perceived betrayal.

Harper places an emphasis on romances set in a realistic scenario. No person or life is perfect, and everyone has problems. That is exactly the type of story Harper excels at, the kind of story that gives the reader the flair of romance without being left with a sense of disbelief.

At the same time throughout the book there is a strong theme of women supporting other women. Essentially the film club provides a place of comfort, a place for conversation or advice and a place where women can make other women stronger. The women take a young girl under their wings and help strengthen her self-image and teach her to discover her personality, femininity and teach her to deal with her overbearing abusive mother.

I think that sub-plot in particular is quite important in our day and age, because we live in a time of virtual contact, online friendships and no longer get together they way we used to. It makes clubs like the Vintage Film Club even more important, both in this fictitious setting and real life settings.

Overall this is a lively, witty romantic story with some serious undertones and sub-plots. Harper has let those serious points flow into the story without disrupting the fun, the humour or the budding relationship between Claire and Nic. The are so close, and yet so far apart at the same time.

Dating the Enemy by Amber Page

w555310

Jessie and Nick clash when their companies end up campaigning for the same account. It doesn’t take long for the clashes to become fiery and tempting. Healthy competition soon turns to flirtation and whole lot more sizzling scenarios.

Jessie is also trying to cope with a medical condition linked to the tragic death of her mother. This makes her even more vulnerable during the very aggressive attack and takeover attempt by Nick’s father.

I liked the way the author slipped in a very subtle yet important message about breast cancer. No matter what age you are or what type of medical history you have, always do a self-examination. If you find something, always go to see your doctor.

Do not wait and do not talk yourself into thinking it will go away or it isn’t worth checking. Women are absolutely notorious for putting themselves and their medical needs after everything else, and for talking themselves into the fact that a possible something is probably a nothing. The message here is ‘do not ignore’ and better safe than sorry.

This is a spicy wee romance with quite a serious sub-plot mixed into the story. I received a copy of this book courtesy of Harlequin UK and Mills & Boon.

First Time in Forever by Sarah Morgan

81rIHyqmzjL-200x317

I know I have probably said this before, but Sarah Morgan really has this knack of pulling on your heartstrings. She knows exactly how and when to pull them in her stories.

Emily is thrown for a loop by the events of the last few months. She has gone from being a single career woman to the guardian of a very young child.

She is trying to avoid the press at all costs, and to do so she has escaped to a place no person will look for them. Emily is also stricken with a phobia of water, which comes to a head on Puffin Island. Yes, that’s right an island. The areas of land that tend to be surrounded by a large body of water. What on earth could go wrong?

Into this chaotic mess of emotions steps the very handsome and terribly supportive Ryan. Right place, right time and an electric attraction between the two of them makes for a lovely romantic read.

Ryan helps her to face her fears and stay safe. Unfortunately he also wants her, but doesn’t want her baggage.
What Morgan does describe perfectly is the way islanders act and think. Once they accept someone into the inner fold, and as one of the islanders, then they are willing to help and protect them in any way possible.

Makes sense when you think about the fact that many islands are left to their own devices, and are often cut off from the rest of the world in extreme weather situations. They learn to depend on and watch out for each other.

I think Emily is actually looking for the sense of family and safety she has inadvertently found on Puffin Island. She can finally leave the dysfunctional darkness of her own family and her past behind her. Being a part of whole instead of just a single unit.

Once again Sarah Morgan has managed to create the perfect combination of romantic tension, heartbreak, longing and emotional turbulence, with strong memorable characters and a heart-warming plot.

Nine Month Countdown by Leah Ashton

Sometimes you meet someone in life and all it is meant to be is a fleeting moment in time. If that per chance encounter happens to be of the passionate variety, then that also is perhaps only to be a fond memory one dwells upon in later years.

Both Ivy and Angus believe their brief encounter is destined to be a moment of unbridled passion never to be repeated again. For Ivy it is an unexpected loss of control, and she hates relinquishing control to anyone else, even to her own desires.

Unfortunately life in general is like a box of chocolates and you never know what you’re going to get. In this case Ivy gets something she just hadn’t planned for. The kind of surprise that changes all her well thought out plans.

It just remains to be seen whether or not Angus will be willing to go along with her new plans, which focus around the surprise. Ivy isn’t quite sure what to do with the SAS soldier, who most certainly will not be controlled, led or ordered around by the savvy business executive.

Bridesmaid with Attitude by Christy McKellen

He needs a pretend girlfriend to fool his mother and she needs a fake boyfriend to keep her job. Sound straightforward right? If there wasn’t that mega pesky physical attraction between them. A powerful  vibe they are both finding it hard to ignore.

Emily is feisty, knows what she wants and takes anyone she fancies a bite of. She has learnt to fend for herself since her family dropped her like a hot potatoe. Why? For looking and being very much like her mother. Certainly an unfair and judgemental reason to avoid a family member.

Theo is a broody, stubborn and passionate man, who finds Emily both infuriating and alluring. When her big mouth triggers a paparazzi frenzy and the truth about her past becomes national fodder, Theo has to choose between comforting or turning away from her.

This story is about a young woman living under the shadow of mental illness, having to deal with the misconceptions and harsh reactions of the ignorant. Nice little sub-plot there.
