The power of mind or the power of others…

The Heavens RiseThe Heavens Rise by Christopher Rice
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I can’t fault the setting of the atmosphere. It is suitably mysterious and eery with a side twist of paranormal activity and a hankering of horror. What it did lack at times was a suitable description of what was actually going on. Too much assumption on the authors part that the reader will make the connections without him making them clear on paper. A lot of living in the head and not enough between the pages.
Christopher Rice has a sense for the darker macabre storytelling. His villain was written in a way that could divide the reader. He was both evil and managed to evoke a sense of sympathy at the same time. It was a shame that although Niquette played the leading role in the book she wasn’t really present for most of it. Her character was important in the grand scheme of the story but not given enough space or time to evolve.
The last quarter of the book the story takes a giant swivel in the direction of Sci-Fi.
To be quite honest I liked the concept but the delivery wasn’t well executed. The scenario of the accident and the events that unfold during the accident were confusing to say the least. Up till the last few chapters the reader seems to be dealing with a sociopath with telekinetic abilities or the power to sway the conscious thought of others. The real answer seems to get lost in the lack of detail and clarity.
I think Rice is still finding his feet and hope he will endeavour to perhaps wade in a direction that he feels propelled towards rather than the one that is expected of him.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley.
